University of Nevada Environment

Hello All!
This week is really exciting because on Wednesday May 21st, we can go take a look at our plot of land. First, (on Wednesday) we will go to Main station to meet with Kevin Piper and learn about what resources are available to us (i.e. manure). We are to meet at Main Station farm on McCarran at 2pm. I forgot to ask Jen for directions, so if you would like to come, which I hope you all will, please check your e-mail tomorrow or just call me and I can give you directions. After this we will head to Valley Road to create a structure for a compost pile and remove large rocks from the site. Yes, this will be labor intensive so it would be wise to wear comfortable work clothing that you don't mind getting dirty (sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended). For directions to our garden I am going to direct you to google maps.

1. Go to google maps
2. Type in UNR, Reno, Nevada
3. Scroll around on the map until you find the intersection of Laurel St. and Valley Road
4. Now switch the map to the satellite image (this option appears in the top right corner of the map)
5. Zoom in once or twice
6. Move the map so the intersection of Laurel and Valley is in the bottom left corner
7. the plot of land that is lined with a few trees is ours
8. You should also see some green houses in the satellite image, you can park somewhere around there and walk up to the site

Sorry, I know that these directions are a little confusing so don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions. Also, if you would like to join us at Main Station at 2pm, I have room in my car for three people, let me know if you would like a ride. If you would like to join us for the second half of the day, plan to meet at the garden site at about 3:30. We will most likely be there until 6ish, so don't worry if you are not on time. Please, please, please come and bring friends too (more people means a lighter work load)! If you can't make it, but would like to see the site, let me know and I will try to set up a separate time where another group can see our garden to be.
*Another exciting bit of information* We will have access to greenhouses for the month of June. Along with the greenhouses come Master Gardeners who are full of helpful information. We will start out plants in the greenhouses and then transplant them once we have access to the entire plot of land in late June.

Hope to see you all Wednesday!
