Charlie and I visited the worm amigos today, and they are exceeding expectations! We found tons of eggs in a whole barrage of different stages. Tons of green (new) eggs, slightly brown (middle stage), dark brown (last stage before 'birth'), and Charlie even found a spot crawling (pun wasn't originally intended, but they were crawling) with tiny white brand new worms!!! Today was the 4th week in a row we have fed them. The temperature, moisture, food consumption, and worm morale levels are really…

What an awesome day!!! Darren completely set us up with a better bin design, fresh casting, manure, and straw! We started the day out at Darren's vermicomposting site in the far reaches of Spanish Springs. He explained how he started his bin, how he maintains it, and new ideas on expanding his knowledge of the vermicomposting world. One thing that I thought was interesting, was his "Experimental Bin." Darren takes a small population of worms from his stock and puts them into a seperate bin and a…

What criterion do you have to judge to buy an essay paper online? … It is very common that every time you search for an essay writing service to buy essay, you get thousands of sites in the search engine result. This huge list of sites makes it really complicated for you to pick one out of thousands services available claiming to be the best in market.
At this stage, you find yourself confused to select a good and reliable one and you face difficulty to differentiate a fake from the real one. L…

14th
I went out to the S2S site to water and feed the worms and noticed a heavy amount of maggots in the compost. Fed them about a half garbage can full of food.
16th
Delia and I went out to feed the worms! There was a VERY FULL garbage can full of food waiting for us as the DC. Most of the food that we had previously added was practically decomposed and looks like AMAZING soil!!! There were still a lot of maggots, but Delia was going to contact someone about if there was anything we could do t…

Fri 9/4/09 75 pounds of worms were delivered today. I walled off half of the 6 x 20 bin to create a 6 x 10' area. I covered that area with shredded paper and saturated that paper with water. Then I dumped out the worms which came in 5 lb bags onto about half of that area. The worms covered about 6 x 5' this was a smaller space then what the worms would normally fill but I had a limited amount of food with which to cover them so I wanted to reduce the surface area I had to cover and the chance th…

All Washington wants to talk about these days is the big
Medical insurance debate or big splash environmental items like hybrid cars and wind farms. But we need to remind Washington and the public to focus on the little things that everyone can do to make a big difference. Things like installing a
Programmable thermostat, or adding a
Ceiling fan to a room to circulate…

Do you ever get that feeling that you could have done a little more? Like you could have done a little better or worked a little harder? It's hard to keep the momentum going until that very last moment. I've got one more 7-10 pg paper to write and I'll be free for one long luxurious week. I will begin to catch up on projects which have been temporarily stalled. I will have time to plan events for the fall and summer and prepare for classes beginning again Monday. I hope to make some time to do s…

I wanted to briefly touch on all the networking and connections made throughout this project with businesses and individuals. Thanks to Mattie Melrose, we had many great speakers come to our class who all presented viable options and ideas that could potentially see the further success of this project. Craig Whitt brought us the idea of using wind row composting, Darren Murphy presented us with his way to compost with red worms, Leslie Allen helped brainstorm with us on ways to get the community…

We constructed out bin around the middle of April. It took about three plus hours to put together and undulates like a worm. It is three cinderblocks high, and about ninety feet long. We were successful in its completion and now we are waiting for worms to be put into it. It was nice to have everyone work together and to finally see some of our hard work be physically manifested rather than planning and planning with no results. Darren Murphy, the founder of Sierra Worm Solutions, graciously don…

There is a huge re-cap needed which I will be doing throughout the day today. UNAE 310 is finished as a class but I feel confident that our goals in this aren't going to end with it. Last Wednesdays meeting went in my mind really well so I believe I will start with a brief review summary of my thoughts and feelings on how that went. There were some topics of the discussion that I wasn't expecting to hear about since we hadn't addressed these as a group. For example, it would be a great idea to g…

As the tension rises at the end of the semester I am constantly reminding myself that it will all be over in just a few days, then we can enjoy camping and outdoor activities galore. Just next weekend we'll be heading to Yosemite to enjoy the falls at their prime. The weekend after we will enjoy our first rafting trip in Sequoia Forest. In July we will be going with a guide from Friends of Nevada Wilderness to do some conservation work. I am also looking forward to creating a presentation for in…

Sometimes you're just trotting along and everything seems fine but then the littlest thing can ruin it all. Nearing the end of the semester is a relief, I feel I've completed most everything I need to do (except a few more required blog posts) but I'm already starting to feel the stress of all the things I've been putting off until the semester is over and of the beginning of summer classes. I am looking forward to a deep sigh of relief on Monday after my last final is taken and last paper hande…

We did build the first worm bin and we had some materials left over which we do plan to use in the future, probably over the summer. Sometime shortly before June 7th, when the DC will re-open for summer, we will be filling the bin with worms and begin composting. The DC has promised to match the funds we raised (~3,700) so we have plenty of money to expand the system when our worms double. We will be arranging people to transport the food residuals for the summer and will monitor the amount of f…

I really enjoyed our Earth Day Trashion Show. There were over 300 people in the audience which means that all our marketing really paid off. Bringing all the different groups of models and designers was a huge challenge but was also incredibly rewarding. Having children in the show was incredible, I would not put on another show without them if I can help it. It is amazing that even though we did months of planning there was still so much left undone, so many ideas that were not completed and ta…

I can't believe we will really be building our first worm bin this Saturday! I knew deep down that we could do it but just like you sometimes don't believe that you are really going on a trip until after you have already left, I didn't really believe it until now that we would actually be building bins. Of course, there is still money to be raised for the purchase of the worms, without who no composting will happen. I have no doubts that we will accomplish this goal, we have had so much interest…
