Vermicomposting is happening on UNR campus

Fri 9/4/09 75 pounds of worms were delivered today. I walled off half of the 6 x 20 bin to create a 6 x 10' area. I covered that area with shredded paper and saturated that paper with water. Then I dumped out the worms which came in 5 lb bags onto about half of that area. The worms covered about 6 x 5' this was a smaller space then what the worms would normally fill but I had a limited amount of food with which to cover them so I wanted to reduce the surface area I had to cover and the chance th… Continue

Do you ever get that feeling?

Do you ever get that feeling that you could have done a little more? Like you could have done a little better or worked a little harder? It's hard to keep the momentum going until that very last moment. I've got one more 7-10 pg paper to write and I'll be free for one long luxurious week. I will begin to catch up on projects which have been temporarily stalled. I will have time to plan events for the fall and summer and prepare for classes beginning again Monday. I hope to make some time to do s… Continue

Excited to go on a Friends of Nevada Wilderness Trip

As the tension rises at the end of the semester I am constantly reminding myself that it will all be over in just a few days, then we can enjoy camping and outdoor activities galore. Just next weekend we'll be heading to Yosemite to enjoy the falls at their prime. The weekend after we will enjoy our first rafting trip in Sequoia Forest. In July we will be going with a guide from Friends of Nevada Wilderness to do some conservation work. I am also looking forward to creating a presentation for in… Continue

Life is not always easy

Sometimes you're just trotting along and everything seems fine but then the littlest thing can ruin it all. Nearing the end of the semester is a relief, I feel I've completed most everything I need to do (except a few more required blog posts) but I'm already starting to feel the stress of all the things I've been putting off until the semester is over and of the beginning of summer classes. I am looking forward to a deep sigh of relief on Monday after my last final is taken and last paper hande… Continue

Vermicomposting update

We did build the first worm bin and we had some materials left over which we do plan to use in the future, probably over the summer. Sometime shortly before June 7th, when the DC will re-open for summer, we will be filling the bin with worms and begin composting. The DC has promised to match the funds we raised (~3,700) so we have plenty of money to expand the system when our worms double. We will be arranging people to transport the food residuals for the summer and will monitor the amount of f… Continue

Earth Day Trashion Show was a Huge Success!

I really enjoyed our Earth Day Trashion Show. There were over 300 people in the audience which means that all our marketing really paid off. Bringing all the different groups of models and designers was a huge challenge but was also incredibly rewarding. Having children in the show was incredible, I would not put on another show without them if I can help it. It is amazing that even though we did months of planning there was still so much left undone, so many ideas that were not completed and ta… Continue

Vermicomposting this Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe we will really be building our first worm bin this Saturday! I knew deep down that we could do it but just like you sometimes don't believe that you are really going on a trip until after you have already left, I didn't really believe it until now that we would actually be building bins. Of course, there is still money to be raised for the purchase of the worms, without who no composting will happen. I have no doubts that we will accomplish this goal, we have had so much interest… Continue

Composting will occur!

I am so excited that our class has settled on an immediate solution to our composting challenge. What we have now is the ability to move forward, to create a plan and execute it. We have decided that vermicomposting will allow us to get started right away and with minimal maintenance of the system and start-up costs. Putting the pieces together is the fun of it. What we need (and need to know) Cinder blocks Secure a specific plot of land Use of a backhoe for a day or maybe a weekend ?Driver/oper… Continue

Questions about the composting system

Things we need to find/figure out: How much is the total amount of post and pre- consumer waste coming out of the DC at the busiest times of year? What permits will we need? How will compost be stored until pick-up? (buckets/dumpster) How often will compost be picked up? (daily/weekly) How will compost be transported?(pick-up truck/specialized dumpster truck) How will compost be transferred into the composting system?(buckets/dump(ster) truck) Where will composting operations take place?(main s… Continue

Trashion Show

I am so excited for the next EnAct Trashion show which will take place in the JCSU in late April. We are getting everything in order already and hope to have a much bigger and better show this time. The first show was magical, but now that we've had some practice there are a few things we will change. Drop me a note anyone if you want to know more about the show or get involved. I will post updates as soon as we settle the date. Continue

Hello to all

Blogging is weird. Now that I've said that I'll move on to blogging : ) This is my first blog and it's weird cuz I like to talk a lot and be listened too but something about putting every little thought out there for the world to see seems really dangerous. Like if I blog something stupid, it's always there (although I suppose I could delete it), when you talk out loud stupidities disappear into thin air. Just get your friends drunk and it's like you used that little flashy thing from MIB on the… Continue
