University of Nevada Environment

I've decided to start keeping track of my progress with the project as a record and as a way to let you all know how I'm doing and to allow you to offer suggestions or sources to any of the stories.

Here's a rough timeline of my story ideas and how I plan to assemble a green series for The Nevada Sagebrush.

1) Where are we at?
-What progress has the university made in respect to the environment - buildings, initiatives, departments, majors, etc.
-Where do students fit into this progress, what do they want to see, what do they like, what don't they like etc.
-What are the university's goals in respect to the environment and where does it see itself in five years or more?
Sources:
-Academy for The Environment, President Milton Glick, recycling center, S.E.E.D.S., coalition of environmental universities, regular research (contacts for most of these people can be found in the resources tab)

2) Preview events (multiple-story platform)
-S.E.E.D.S is planning to put up solar panels, follow their time table and preview events with a "get involved" angle
-Other clubs plan events on Arbor Day and other events. Preview these briefly in the paper.
-Answer: Who, what, why, how, what's next, what do we do?

3) Cover events
-Photo pages/essays showing the events, highlighting main points but sticking more with photography than words
-Graphics if/when needed
-Solar panel story could be front page news with photos, follow up story and graphics.

4) Profiles
-After becoming entrenched with people and groups, profile the new club (still unnamed) and various people in the club.
-Pay close attention to how people can get involved, tangible results, highlight purpose of club and what/why they exist

5) Follow up
-Follow up on any leads, story ideas or other

Hi Mike. As we discussed, I think there are some good ideas here. We've talked about the "how did we get here story?" already. Another thought I have is to focus less on events than processes, as in, "what are the best processes that can be put in place on campus to help the environment the most?" Or, "which processes that have been put in place are simply not working and why?" Or, "here are the 5 things the university has committed to doing--how successful have they been?" This last is a kind of report card on how we're doing. That's it for now. Keep working on defining these stories, and before you publish each one let's sit down and talk about what you've done.
